Do you really want to ‘test’ this?

June 29, 2009 · 3 Comments

I was thinking about my need for testers. At this stage the game is playable, but lacks a lot of dialog. When I say “I’d like testers” I really mean “I’d like people to suggest dialog for me, for no pay.” It’s not a really fun job. It’s more fun to wait until the end of the month when the game is finished and testing is really just testing. What do you think? Would anyone want to struggle through a dialog-light game and suggest who says what?

Well, the writing is your job :) , but would it help to have testers who just tell you “there needs to be dialog here”? (See a comment I posted on an earlier post – maybe a month ago?)

I think you should write all the dialogue yourself – the game will seem choppy if different people write dialogue for different things, because the styles might be different.

re: saying where to put it. Yes, that would be very helpful. It’s just hard to get motivated to write dialog that maybe nobody will read, knowing that I’m maybe not writing enough for some topic that people will come back to.

re: inconsistent style. That’s a valid point. But my ideal would be to let others do the donkey work and then I could just spend my time doing the more enjoyable task of seeing how it plays and improving it :)

Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Tomorrow I’ll finish off the missing dialog, and Wednesday add a lot more clues, then maybe upload it for testing so that, as Caius said, people can point out where is the greatest need.
